Museums by Mail
________________________________________________

In an effort to better support the needs of Maine teachers, the University of Maine Museum of Art is making several changes to our educational programming. During the 2011-2012 academic year the Museum will evaluate our current educational offerings and will begin developing new outreach programs for students and teachers. The direct experience of viewing significant, original works of art and the dynamic, interactive learning that takes place in the galleries is important to the development of students. To this end, an initiative currently under consideration is the possibility of securing transportation funding so that more students can visit the museum.

Unfortunately, due to steadily declining participation over the past 20 years, the Museums by Mail program will be fully discontinued in July 2012. For the 2011-12 school year you will still be able to borrow up to three of our 10 most popular exhibits from the Museum traveling collection for use in your classroom. Maine children’s art was not gathered for the coming year, and will not be available. Our standard paper announcement and catalog will no longer be mailed, but you may click HERE to see these selections.

You may request these exhibits by contacting the museum’s Registrar Steve Ringle at 207-561-3366 or by email:  art@maine.edu. Exhibits are available to teachers on a first-come, first-served basis; requests must be received by July 1, as always. Exhibits must be picked-up personally from the Museum of Art at 40 Harlow Street and may be kept for one month. Teachers are also responsible for their safe return to the Museum. As such, we will no longer provide reimbursement for shipping the exhibit cases.

The Vincent A. Hartgen Traveling Exhibitions program is supported by a grant from the Patrons of the Arts.
