Location: UMMA Classroom, 40 Harlow Street, Bangor
This two- part workshop, intended for the beginner, will develop a basic understanding of the principles of drawing. Through basic exercises and projects, the student will explore the formal issues of drawing through the exploration of materials and their proper use. Along with the technical aspects of drawing, both traditional and non-traditional, the class will investigate the important role that drawing plays for artists in the development of their work. Ultimately, the process of drawing will help the beginning artist “see” in a way that will benefit their work tremendously.

Session One
- Basic materials and their proper use: Graphite, Charcoal, nero lead, types of papers, erasers, sharpeners etc.
- Thumbnail drawings and their importance in the development of a composition
- How to use a grid to transpose a simple thumbnail drawing into a developed composition
- How to render with graphite
- Composing from a simple object
- The use of light, perspective, value, texture, gesture, etc.

Session Two
- We will critique the drawings from week one
- How to set up a simple still life
- Blind contour drawings and their importance
- The importance of volume
- The completion of a one hour drawing
- A simple critique of the work of week two
- How drawing has become a distinct medium unto itself and it’s importance for the beginning artist

Instructor: Ed Nadeau
Artist Ed Nadeau is a native of Maine whose paintings depict the land and people of his home state in various incarnations. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1980, receiving his BFA in painting and attended graduate school at the Maryland Institute College of Art, receiving his MFA in painting in 1986. Assistant Professor Nadeau teaches drawing, 2d-Design and painting at the University of Maine in Orono.
His paintings have been exhibited widely; including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland Art Place, School 33 Art Center, The Park School, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, the University of Maine in Orono, and in 2006 at Whitney Art Works in Portland, Maine. His paintings are represented by Elan Fine Arts, Rockport, Maine and are held in collections both nationally and internationally.
In 2005 one of his narrative paintings, “The Airline” was included in a new book, “More Paintings of Maine” edited by art writer Carl Little and Published by Down East Press.
He is currently working on a new series of portraits titled, “Big Box Images: Portraits of the American Consumer." The graphite drawings for this series have recently been accepted into the Viewing Program at the Drawing Center in New York City and can be viewed on their website. |
